Department of Physics and Chemistry of polymers was founded in 1959. At the department the research on the properties of polymers synthesized in other departments of the institute was conducted. Since 1965 the academician of National academy of sciences of Ukraine Yu.S.Lipatov was the head of the department. He was a student of the famous scientist in the field of polymer physicochemistry academician V.A.Karhin. Yu.S.Lipatov laid the scientific directions of department’s works, further development of which allowed identifying new approaches to fundamental research of multicomponent polymer systems.

11 Doctors and 49 Candidates of Sciences were prepared in the department.

The research results are summarized in 20 monographs (including 5 reviews), 3 reference books, 1300 scientific articles and 170 patents.
